1 Corinthians 9:19-23 | Irrelevance 


The slow creep of irrelevance

In what ways can each of us become increasingly irrelevant without even noticing it?

Does this apply to workplaces, cafes, sports teams, performing artists, even churches? Share examples

How come we may not even notice it?


Rick Warren put it this way.

‘When the speed of change around an organisation is faster than the speed of change inside the organisation, the organisation becomes irrelevant.’

Is this right and does it really matter?


As an example, chat about your musical tastes and when they were formed!


One way or another we’re all in the process of becoming irrelevant. So how do we fight it?


How to keep on changing, learning and evolving?

Why do many of us find change difficult?

Here are three principles that help you to understand why you resist change.

1. You aren’t opposed to Change, just Change you didn’t think of.

It’s not so easy when it is generated by other people or groups.


2. You crave what you already like

It is natural to want to repeat what we are comfortable with.


3. You encounter problems with success

Success can lead to complacency or to becoming self protective.


How to embrace change?

1.   Love the mission more than the methods

The mission is the critical thing and the methods will evolve and change. How might that apply to your family life, your workplace, your retirement plans, our church?

2. Get radical

In an era of rapid change we’re going to have to be extra focussed.

3. Become a student of culture

Strive to stay in touch and connect with what’s going on around about us.


4. Surround yourself with younger people

If it’s possible seek to have younger people involved. They’ll help you keep in touch and solve all your tech problems for you!


Aging Well

If we’re open to changing, evolving and being flexible, our older years can be our most fruitful. Think of Biblical examples of inspiring older leaders and the example they set.
