Several our of members have expressed deep concerns about the Victorian governments' proposed legislation 'Change or Suppression (Conversion) practices prohibition bill.' You are not alone, our Archbishop has spoken publicly and written to clergy on this topic encouraging us to respond to a proposal that will not only affect churches but others from traditional cultures and faiths. For those of us who care for or are part of the struggle of sexual minorities, writers linked to Melbourne Anglican Media have recently pointed out that the proposed legislation may also disadvantage the very people it seeks to support.
The most balanced and thorough consideration of this topic I have seen is written by Mark Sneddon of Institute for civil society.
One response we can take at this stage is to write considered letters to our local members, the premier's department or members of the Victorian upper house asking them to reconsider the wisdom of the proposed laws.
