Reading the book as a whole

  1. Make time to read through the book from beginning to end. Read out-loud so that you hear the whole book and feel its power and drama. There are many themes that hold the book together, write them down as you go because they will help you to understand what the whole book is about.
  2. As you read, make a list of the things you find hard to understand and summary of the key features of the story.
  3. You can also make a list of the providential coincidences that occur, as there are many of them, and they are crucial for the development of the story.
  4. Ask God to work his good purposes in you as you read and study the book of Esther.

  1. Why are wealth, prestige, power and possessions so attractive to us?
  2. Our media gives us biased news, and give the impression that if there is a God then he is irrelevant. How can we avoid being brainwashed by our media?
  3. We worship the Lord Jesus, who was born in a manger, and crucified on a cross. How should this shape our lives, our decisions, our political views, and our lifestyle?
  4. What have you learnt from this chapter in Esther?
  5. What should we pray in response to this chapter?
