Workship
by Kara Martin

(a book review by Kirsty Brown, Pastoral & Executive Minister, St Columbs)

Are you passionate about what you do on a day to day basis or do you find your daily tasks uninspiring and dull? Is God interested in what you do? Do you do what you do in light of your faith or despite it?

In Workship, Kara Martin looks at the theology of work (not just paid work), different approaches to integrating your faith and your work, practical wisdom to apply in your work environment and the ways in which churches can support this. Whilst the book tackles each of these areas theoretically, it is also full of stories on how other Christians have addressed particular issues or challenges. Martin manages to cover a lot of material from a considerable range of research and sources in a very accessible way. You can read the book reflectively too as each chapter finishes with a prayer and some questions to help you reflect.

Has our work become an idol or do we do our work for the glory of God? How do we ensure that our identity is sourced in God rather than our work? I found this book helpful in thinking more about how I approach my daily tasks, considering how I reflect Christ in what I do and how I do it.  If you’re going to read one book about the theology of work – read this one!
